PUNE: A dramatic scene played out on Bund Garden Road after a crime branch officer gave chase to two robbers, managing to overpower and arrest one of them on Thursday afternoon.

The robbers had targeted a 20-year-old man and were fleeing the spot with his bag containing two cellphones and clothes, collectively worth Rs10,000. The incident took place opposite HSBC Bank on Bund Garden Road near Council Hall on Thursday afternoon around 2.15pm.
The police have identified the suspect under arrest as Ram Lalit Dinesh Paswan (25), who hails from Bihar.
The complainant Anuj Dukhi Saroj works with a travel company in Wagholi. In his complaint, filed with the Bund Garden police station, Saroj has mentioned that he planned to travel to his native place Allahabad. He was waiting to board a train at 4pm from the Pune railway station. The robbers targeted Saroj while he waited for the train to arrive at the railway station.
The police said that the robbers initiated a conversation with Saroj after telling him that they would also be travelling to Allahabad. The robbers allegedly asked Saroj to accompany them to a travel firm on Bund Garden Road so that they could purchase a train ticket.
Saroj, Paswan and the unidentified suspect walked past Alankar Talkies junction to reach Bundagarden Road and stopped opposite HSBC Bank, near the compound wall of the Council Hall.
The complainant stated that when they stopped the men suddenly attacked him, snatched his bag and ran off towards the Council Hall police chowkey. Saroj immediately raised an alarm.
Sub-inspector Dinesh Patil of the crime branch (Unit 1) was patrolling the area to prevent robberies when he witnessed the robbers attacking Saroj and fleeing with the bag.
Patil chased after the robbers and overpowered Paswan but his accomplice made a daring escape. Paswan during questioning told the police that he committed the robbery at the behest of his accomplice in order to make a quick buck.

Paswan does not have any criminal antecedents in Pune but he hasn’t revealed any details about the possible whereabouts of his accomplice, the police said. An analysis of his cellphone call detail record revealed that he had been working with a catering firm based in Mumbai. The crime branch is on the lookout for the absconding suspect.
Saroj has registered a complaint under sections 392 (robbery) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code with the Bund Garden police station. The crime branch has transferred Paswan’s custody to the Bund Garden police for taking further action.
