Nilgiris collector: Clean shops every Thursday

Udhagamandalam: Collector J Innocent Divya instructed the shopkeepers in the Ooty municipal market to mandatorily clean their shops and surroundings on every Thursday morning for two hours.
The collector, after inspecting the market, sealed three meat shops after they were found unclean. She gave shopkeepers one day time to clean the shops.
As part of World Environment Day, she conducted a mass cleaning programme at the market, which was one of the oldest in the state.
Vegetable waste and meat waste dumped around in and around the market attract animals. These animals hinder people’s movement around the market.

There are around 1,327 shops located in the Ooty municipal market, besides 200 more shops in different complexes located in various places in the town.
According to the municipal officials, the municipality spends nearly Rs 14.5 lakh per month to clean the garbage within the market area.
