LUCKNOW: Patients of King George's Medical University (
KGMU) can hope to receive lab reports
online by the end of this month.
Around 5,000 people undergo various pathological tests daily at KGMU. Besides saving them the trouble of doing the rounds of collection counters, the paperless service will save KGMU Rs 2.76 lakh annually.
"The measure is equivalent to saving 72 trees a year. The service will be first introduced in the Gandhi Ward in the next 10 days and extended to all the departments by the end of the month," said KGMU's IT cell in-charge Dr Sandeep Bhattacharya.
Dr Bhattacharya pointed out that 16 reams of paper were made from one tree. One ream comprises 480-500 sheets. KGMU uses at least four reams a day. At this rate, the minimum consumption of paper a month is 96 reams, barring weekly holidays, which is equivalent to 7.5 trees. Since a single ream costs around Rs 240, the annual saving by going paperless is Rs 2.76 lakh, he explained.
