Target word

Had your morning coffee?

It's time to pop your thinking caps on and find the nine-letter word.

Our morning homepage editor and resident clue-writer has this clue for you this morning: this will get the heart rate going.

We'll print the names of those first past the post.

Go!

Join the conversation: Waste, and wasteful spending

They knew - and they did nothing. Well, perhaps not nothing. But certainly not anywhere near enough.

A scathing new report shows the Victorian government failed to heed warnings six years ago that China would stop taking our recycling waste.

China finally called our bluff and refused to accept low-grade recycling waste last year. Dangerous stockpiles of recycling waste now litter the state - with several already going up in toxic flames - and continue to grow.

And despite the government amassing a $511 million fund to improve waste management, the contents of many Victorians’ yellow bins are still being sent to landfill.

Why? How can millions of taxpayer dollars be set aside to deal with waste, and the problem is only growing? As individuals, why are we not reining in our appetite for plastic containers and throwaway coffee cups? And why aren’t we lobbying big corporates to use their combined brains and technologies to find solutions? Tell us what you think at our Facebook page, What's got Melbourne talking.

Five-star Starc seals Australia's win over West Indies

Mitchell Starc has bowled Australia to a backs-to-the-wall World Cup win over the West Indies, with the defending champions prevailing by 15 runs at Trent Bridge.

After Australia recovered from 4-38 early in their batting innings to post 288, Starc claimed figures of 5-44 and took wickets at crucial times to wrap up the win.

Nathan Coulter-Nile had earlier been the hero with the bat for Australia, clubbing 92 off just 60 balls after Steve Smith (73) and Alex Carey stablised the first innings.

Starc and Pat Cummins then put Australia on the front foot with the ball, removing openers Evin Lewis and Chris Gayle in the first five overs.

One little television show has revived a whole load of interest in one simple toy. That toy is LEGO. And there are quite a few adults sitting down to play again since the runaway success of LEGO Masters.

Now grown ups are being offered the chance to play without the kids at the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre in Chadstone on Saturday night.

LEGO Masters stars including Maddy, Jimmy, Kaitlyn, Marielle, Gayan, Dinushi, Jordan and Kale will be there too.

We’ve got three double passes to give away to the first readers who can tell us who won this year’s LEGO Masters contest. Email your answer, along with your name and phone number, to hanna.turbet@theage.com.au

Blaze engulfs Clayton home, one left with burns to hands

Two dozen firefighters battled a house blaze in Melbourne's south-east that left one person with burns to their hands.

The house, on Wellington Road in Clayton, was fully alight when firefighters arrived shortly before 8pm last night.

Four trucks, a Teleboom (which is an aerial water monitor) and 24 firefighters took more than 40 minutes to get the fire under control.

No one else was injured.

Police and paramedics attended the blaze, but the cause is not yet known.

Good morning!

Good morning, and welcome to Friday!

It's 12 degrees in the city right now, with a cloudy morning forecast ahead of a mostly sunny afternoon and a top of 16 degrees.

There is a good service on all train lines except for the Sandringham line. But good news for commuters there - it's the last business day with buses replacing trains. Metro Tunnel project works are due to finish on Sunday.

And at this early hour, the roads are looking fairly good.
