NALGONDA: Four dogs were poisoned in Ammanabole village under Narketpally mandal of Nalgonda district on Wednesday. Animal activists alleged that the sarpanch of the village, Rami Reddy, had directed culling of the dogs as they were fighting among themselves. “Instead of going to the animal husbandry department, he hired contractors who used pesticide to kill these dogs,” said animal activist Raseel Ahluwalia.

When contacted, the extension officer of Panchayat Raj and Rural Development (EOPRD), Narketpally, Lakshminarayan, said: “The sarpanch is not aware of the new laws. I will talk to him and he will not do it again.” Swamy Bhagwan Das, vice president of Society of Prevention of Cruelty against Animals (SPCA) and a member of State Animal Welfare Board (SAWB) said that authorities were ignoring questions and trying to conceal facts. “The family of the sarpanch asked us not to file an FIR though the complaint was circulated by one of the family members,” Das said.
Dog culling cases in various districts has been on the rise. Raseel says that in most villages, people are not aware of animal cruelty laws.
