Video on civil hospital surgeon abusing patient goes viral, probe ordered

Rajkot: In a video that had gone viral on social media, a Rajkot civil hospital doctor is heard using harsh words on a poor patient claiming that “if he is not cured he should die.” Gandhinagar’s health department has ordered Rajkot civil hospital to conduct an inquiry into the matter.
The doctor, Dharmendra Gohil, a general surgeon and professor of general surgery department in the hospital, was on duty in the OPD when the video was being recorded. Gohil is first heard telling the patient that he is not in the hospital, asking the patient to inquire with his junior about a prescribed medicine. Thereafter he was heard asking the patient to go back and report after 15 days. When the patient insisted on being prescribed medicine for 15 days till he comes back to the hospital for a check up, pleading with the doctor what if anything happens within these days, the doctor was heard replying gruffly: “Then you should die!” At this, the patient asks, “Then why should I have to come to you?”

The doctor then asked the patient to go to the RMO for further argument and also threatened: “You (patient) are free to do whatever you want to do.”
Gohil, who is on leave for last four days is on a foreign trip with the family. When contacted, medical superintendent Manish Mehta said, “We have got orders from Gandhinagar to initiate an inquiry. A penal of three professors will inquire into the matter. We will record his statement after he (Gohil) comes back.”
