An 18-year-old girl, from Koonimedu near Marakkanam, in the district committed suicide on Thursday, reportedly because of her poor performance in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to medical and dental courses.
The police said the daughter of Mohan, secretary of the fishermen wing of the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, was found hanging in her house.
She was immediately rushed to a private medical college hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
She was the eldest of three and completed her Plus Two from a private school at Thiruchengode in Namakkal district last year.
She had scored 690 marks and attended classes at a NEET coaching centre in Puducherry last year.
