A total of 182 schools in the revenue district participated in the lottery system of admissions of students under the Right to Education (RTE) Act quota here on Thursday.

According to an education official, they included matriculation, nursery and primary schools. A total of 3,546 applications were received for the quota, of which 78 were rejected, the official told The Hindu.

According to Section 12 (1) (c) of the RTE Act, private schools “...shall admit in Class 1, to the extent of at least twenty five percent of the strength of that class, children belonging to the weaker section and disadvantaged group in the neighbourhood and provide free and compulsory elementary education till its completion.”

In schools where the number of applications received exceeded the number of reserved seats, the admissions will be provided based on the lottery system in the presence of officials from the Department of School Education, the official said.

The admissions were opened from May 31 for schools without the lottery system and will go on till June 10 for schools undergoing the lottery system for the admissions under the quota.
