The local unit president of the Aam Aadmi Party, Rangarajan and a few party workers joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday.

Mr. Rangarajan told reporters that he was excited about some of the programmes of the Central government including the proposal to link Godavari and Cauvery rivers. The AAP never took an interest in strengthening the party in the South and the leadership concentrated its work in the Northern and Western India, he said.

Mr. Rangarajan said he would work towards furthering the interest of BJP in the Union Territory. The Puducherry government should work in tandem with the Centre as it comes directly under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, he added. The new members were welcomed by nominated legislator and party president V. Saminathan.

A source in BJP said more other party leaders were likely to defect in the coming days.
