2020 Genesis GV80 Gearing Up To Battle BMW X5 And Mercedes GLE

Genesis is one of the few luxury brands without a crossover, but that’s about to change as spy photographers have caught the GV80 undergoing testing in the Alps.

Previewed by the GV80 concept, the production model has a bold front fascia with a shield-like grille that is flanked by quad headlights. Further below, we can see a wide lower intake and two vertical intakes at the outside edges.

Moving further back, there’s rounded bodywork and a rakish windscreen. The crossover has also been equipped with massive five-spoke alloy wheels and a gently sloping roof.

The rear of the GV80 is heavily disguised, but the model features huge fake exhaust tips. We can also get a glimpse of the taillights, but their design is hard to make out.

Spy photographers didn’t get close enough to snap interior pictures, but the cabin will have a two-spoke steering wheel, a widescreen infotainment system and slender air vents. Drivers will also find metallic accents and new switchgear on the center console.

Genesis hasn’t said much about the crossover, but it likely won’t be offered with a V8 engine. As Genesis CEO Manfred Fitzgerald explained last month, the company has to “hedge our bets” and “pay close attention to markets and legislation.” As a result, the executive said the upcoming G80 won’t have a V8 and there won’t be an evolution of their current 5.0-liter V8 that produces up to 420 hp (313 kW / 426 PS) and 383 lb-ft (519 Nm) of torque.

This means the crossover could be powered by a twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6 that develops 365 hp (272 kW / 370 PS) and 376 lb-ft (509 Nm) of torque. That remains unconfirmed, but we shouldn’t have to wait much longer to find out as the GV80 is expected to be unveiled late this year or early next year.
