Following a plea alleging air pollution around Shakurbasti railway station, allegedly caused due to the loading and unloading of cement, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to carry out an inspection and accordingly take action.
A Vacation Bench comprising NGT judicial member K. Ramakrishnan and expert member Nagin Nanda also directed railway officials to furnish a report on the allegations.
“We direct the Station Superintendent or Terminal Manager, Cement Siding and Chief Goods Supervisor, Cement Siding at Shakurbasti railway station, to submit a report as to what all are the activities undertaken by them in the area to prevent air pollution caused on account of their activities,” it said.
Directing the pollution control body to carry out inspections, the Bench said, “We feel it necessary to get a report from the DPCC who shall inspect the area in question and ascertain the genuineness of the allegations made and if there is any infractions of any law relating to pollution, then action if any, to be taken in this regard, in accordance with the law.”
The directions came when the green panel was hearing a plea which alleged that cement was being stocked in an open area, without any cover, causing pollution. “In spite of the fact that several representations have been made, railway officials are not doing anything in this regard,” the petitioner said.
