Monsoon onset unlikely before June 20 in Bihar

Wind blows at a high speed in Patna on Wednesday
PATNA: With India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday announcing that onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala is likely to be further delayed to June 8, weathermen at Patna meteorological centre claimed that the rain-bearing winds are unlikely to hit Bihar before June 20.
This will make the onset of monsoon delayed in Bihar by at least a week from its normal date of June 10-12. In fact, southwest monsoon is headed towards a week delay in its onset over Kerala coast as well, as its normal date on the southern coast is on June 1.
The delay is also leading to northward movement in mercury column, at least in Bihar. After a slight respite from the mercury mayhem over the last few days, maximum temperature in Patna and most other places in central and south Bihar are likely to remain around fretful 40 degrees C till June 11.
While Bihar will continue to face the heat, majority places in east and northeast India are expected to witness showers over the next few days. Neighbouring Jharkhand and West Bengal are expected to witness light to moderate showers over the next two to three days, but only partly cloudy sky is expected in Bihar.

The rainfall in the neighbouring states has been attributed to a cyclonic circulation, which was lying over western parts of Bihar and its neighbourhood till Tuesday and shifted to east Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday.
“An east-west trough from the cyclonic circulation from east UP to Assam via Jharkhand and West Bengal is expected to cause showers in the neighbouring states, but it would not have any significant influence on the weather conditions in Bihar. Thus, weather in Bihar is expected to be mostly dry over the next few days,” an official at Patna meteorological centre said.
