Coimbatore: Putting to rest speculations about severance of alliance between the ruling AIADMK and BJP, municipal administration minister S P Velumani on Thursday said the existing alliance would remain intact for the local body election.
“The existing alliance is good, and we haven’t faced any problems because of it,” he said. The minister said the preparations for the local body election were being carried out on a fast pace and the election would be conducted shortly.
Earlier in the day, the minister conducted a meeting with collector K Rajamani, city corporation commissioner Sravan Kumar Jatavath and police commissioner Sumit Saran to review the ongoing developmental works in the district.
Speaking about the arrangements made to address the drinking water scarcity in the district, Velumani said, “Water level in the Siruvani reservoir is decreasing constantly. Hence, water from the Pillur reservoir would be supplied to the areas that fall under the Siruvani water scheme. About 8MLD ofPpillur water would be supplied to those wards.”
Pointing out that there are about 2,042 borewells in the city corporation limits, he said water for purposes other than drinking would be distributed on a daily basis to 60 wards. The remaining 40 wards in added areas, meanwhile, would receive water once in two days.
The minister said steps were also being taken to provide water through 10 corporation lorries and as many private lorries.
Referring to the Nipah virus attack in Kerala, Velumani said necessary steps were being taken to prevent the spread of Nipah and all the other communicable diseases in the district.
