PUNE: Thieves and burglars travelling in cars at odd hours and looking for soft targets appear content even with goats, if not a plum strike at flats in housing societies.
New Mangalwar Peth resident Taufiq Abrar Shaikh (32) learnt this the hard way, as he lost two goats he had bought for Rs25,000 to a gang of four men who came in a sports utility vehicle, lifted the animals and fled the spot.
After looking for his goats in various parts of the city and also in the cattle markets of Chakan, Narayangaon and Lonand, Shaikh on Tuesday lodged an FIR with the Samarth police.
Senior inspector (Samarth police) Balkrushna Kadam told TOI that they have obtained CCTV footage from the area. The CCTV footage revealed that that a white colour SUV halted near the cage, where the goats were kept, around 2.30am on May 31 and four men got out of it.
He said, “The images, though a bit blurry, revealed that the four men broke open the lock on the cage and shifted the two goats into the car. Within seconds, the vehicle disappeared in the dark.”
Shaikh is still counting the loss he suffered ahead of the festival. “I work with a private firm in Shivajinagar and live with my family in New Mangalwar Peth. We rear goats near our house and sell them before Eid. I bought the two goats eight months ago and gave them healthy fodder,” he said.
“Our plan was to sell the goats before or on the day of Eid. But before that, some men stole them. One goat was 18-month-old with red body and white legs. The other was a year old with red head and white body,” Shaikh said.

The trend of burglars using cars to get easy access to housing societies and strike at their will has become a major cause for concern for police. The most recent instance was on May 28, when gold ornaments and cash, collectively worth Rs5.80 lakh, were stolen from two flats in Kothrud between 2.30am and 3.30am .
The final two months of 2018 saw six house break-in cases, wherein the burglars had gained uninterrupted access into the housing societies as they arrived in swanky cars.
