Hassan district administration has resolved to plant 25 lakh saplings across the district this year. Besides that, the administration has planned to desilt around 1,500 tanks and construct an equal number of check dams to conserve water.
Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer K.N. Vijay Prakash, speaking at the Environment Day programme here on Wednesday, said planting 25 lakh saplings would be a joint effort of Forest, Horticulture and Agriculture Departments. “The Forest Department has made arrangements for the seedlings required. Our work will be a model in the State”, he said.
The officer said the programme would be implemented effectively by involving schoolchildren. Each student will take care of one plant.
The ZP has decided to desilt 1,500 tanks and the work has already begun. Similarly, 1,500 check dams would be built to stop the flowing water. “We have already identified 2,350 defunct borewells in the district. They all will be recharged”, he said. District and Sessions Judge Shivanna inaugurated the programme by planting a few saplings in Satyavangala Park. He congratulated the district administration for taking up afforestation work.
