The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board is holding discussions with oil companies to look at the feasibility of bringing CNG to the city through pipelines, as per a direction by the National Green Tribunal, TNPCB chairman Shambhu Kallolikar said. In a statement issued on Wednesday, on the occasion of World Environment Day, Mr. Kallolikar said Chennai had around 30 LPG filling stations for vehicles.

“But vehicles in Chennai currently do not use CNG. Since there are no pipelines to bring CNG to the city, it has not been possible to use it in vehicles. However, as per directions of the NGT, we are in the process of holding discussions with oil companies to look at the feasibility of bringing CNG to Chennai,” he said.

He added that registration of new diesel autorickshaws in Chennai had been banned.
