PUNE: A 19-year-old sailor was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his room at the INS Shivaji in
Lonavla, about 65km from here, in the early hours of Wednesday.
The sailor, Akash Kannala, was pursuing direct entry engineering mechanics (DEME) course at the naval training institute.
A release issued by INS Shivaji stated, “Kannala’s course had commenced in March. He hailed from Pardi in Nirmal district of Telangana and is survived by his parents and two siblings. An FIR has been registered with the local police. The Navy has also ordered an inquiry into the tragic incident.”
Lonavla city police officials said they did not recover any suicide note from the room where the sailor was found hanging. “We are yet to ascertain the exact reason behind his death. Preliminary investigation has established that the sailor was not facing any difficulties in the training. He did not even have any disciplinary or administrative issues at the institute. If there is any family angle to the incident, we will be able to ascertain that only after having discussion with his parents, friends and relatives,” inspector B R Patil of the Lonavla police said.
The post-mortem will be carried out on Thursday morning, following which the body will be handed over to the parents of the deceased, Patil added.
