A day after the daylight robbery of 840 g of jewellery from an employee of a gold smithy, Police on Wednesday arrested four persons, who executed the crime in an orchestrated accident, and recovered 690 g of stolen jewellery from them.
The arrested were Daniel (35), his wife Sangeetha (30), their relative Raja (25), all natives of Theni and residents of Thudiyalur, and Badrinath (28) of Sullivan Street. They were arrested by special police teams within 30 hours of the robbery.
It was around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, B. Ramamoorthy (58), an employee of BMC Jewel Designers on Raja Street, was robbed of 840 g of jewellery when he was taking the consignment to deliver to a client at Dharapuram. The robbery took place on Ramar Kovil Street when Ramamoorthy was riding a moped to Gandhipuram from where he had planned to board a bus to Dharapuram.
Video footage from the surveillance camera of a commercial establishment on the road showed Raja hitting Ramamoorthy’s moped from behind deliberately. As the man fell down, two others Daniel’s brother Prithvi (25) and his friend Kumar (24), who came in a scooter, joined the group of people who had gathered to help Ramamoorthy. The video showed Kumar leaving the place with Ramamoorthy’s bag containing the jewellery in the milieu.
The police initially took Raja into custody after having identified him using the CCTV visuals. He confessed to the police that Badrinath, a former employee of BMC Jewel Designers, had informed them about Ramamoorthy going to Dharapuram to deliver the jewellery. The accident was orchestrated as planned by the six accused.
The police arrested Badrinath and recovered 246g of the stolen jewellery from him following Raja’s confession.
“Daniel and Sangeetha, a law student, was in their car at the scene of crime when Raja, Prithvi and Kumar executed the robbery. The police recovered 444g jewellery from the couple,†said P. Perumal, Deputy Commissioner Police (Crime).
He said that the police teams were searching for Prithviraj and Kumar. The police believe that the remaining portion of the jewellery is with the two accused.
