Communal remarks: Cong. worker booked

The Vellarikkundu police station here has registered a case against a local Congress worker for allegedly promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion on a complaint by a local Hindu Aikya Vedi (HAV) activist.

The case was registered against Sajan Joseph, 50, of Punnakkunnu, who is a local worker of the Congress, on a complaint by K.M. Chandran, 50. The complainant alleged that Joseph had made communally offensive comments and tried to manhandle him in a tea shop last week. The police said the case was filed under the Indian Penal Code Section 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony).

The matter is being probed into, the police said adding the case was registered as the complainant had stood by his complaint.

In his complaint, Chandran, a native of Punnakkunnu, said that when he had gone to a teashop nearby his house at around 8 a.m. on May 28, Joseph, who was there at the teashop, insulted him in the presence of others saying that the complainant should not drink milk-added tea as milk comes from ‘Gomata.’

The complainant was also allegedly told by Joseph that Sri Ram and Sri Krishna were not deities. The latter had also communally humiliated the complainant by saying that Hindutva politics would not be allowed in the State. The complaint said Joseph had tried to hit the complainant with the tea glass.
