Thiruvananthapuram: The district panchayat has promised to help government schools in the district to set up libraries in each classroom. The announcement was made by district panchayat president V K Madhu while inaugurating the district-level
school ‘praveshanolsavam’ (admission festival) at Government Higher Secondary School in Palayamkunnu, Varkala, on Thursday.
“The scheme to start
library in every classroom in government schools will be launched soon. Climate study units will be established at every school and green parks will be set up in selected schools,” he said.
The seniors in the school, who are moving Class 12 this year, got readied a souvenir ‘Ente Vidyalayam Ente Swapnangal’, which was released by Elakamon panchayat president V Sumangala.
Varkala MLA V Joy welcomed the 67 kids who took admission in Class I in the school with colourful caps and sweets. He also inaugurated the student police cadet (SPC) unit, open classroom, reading corner and a leisure reading corner for kids and parents. A flash mob, aerobics show and other art programmes were organized for the kids. District panchayat health standing committee chairman V Renjith presided over.
Like in the past two years, majority of government and aided schools in the district recorded an increase in new admissions.
Thanks to the General Education Protection Mission, more parents now choose government schools and Malayalam medium for enrolling their kids. Leading the way were political leaders and people’s representatives.
K Ansalan, MLA, enrolled his son Karthik in Class VI at Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Neyyattinkara.
“I studied in this school and now my son is going to study in the same institution. I urge all parents to utilize the facilities in government schools,” said Ansalan in a Facebook post.
Youth Congress leader Jyothi Vijayakumar, who was recently in news as the translator of Rahul Gandhi’s speech, posted pictures of her son Govardhan, who has joined in Class II at Government LPS, Attinkuzhy, Attipra.
St Mary’s HSS, Pattom, which holds the record of enrolling most number of students for SSLC and higher secondary examinations had 3,500 new admissions this year. “Around 3,000 students took admission in Class V, Class VIII and Class XI and around 500 students received admission in other classes,” said principal C C John. Mayor V K Prasanth inaugurated the Praveshanotsavam at St Mary’s School.
Leading blood bag manufacturer Terumo Penpol distributed notebooks to students of four schools near its manufacturing unit at Vilappilsala. Students of Government Lower Primary School in Peyad, Lower Primary School in Thurthummoola, UP School in Villapilsala and Tribal School in Cherukode were gifted notebooks. The company also gives annual scholarship to five students each from the four schools.
Government High School, Vazhamuttom, got two new buildings this year as the school expects a steady increase in number of admissions.
Around 30 new students joined the Government LPS, Pachalloor, and teachers said more students will be admitted in the next week.
Increase in number of students helped the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Kallara, add a new division each for Class VIII and Class X. The ‘Hello English’ programme at the school turned out to be a catalyst to attract more students.
The trend was similar in other government schools in neighbouring areas of Kadakkal and Karette. At least five to 10% rise in admissions was recorded in most of the government schools in the region.
