PUNE: Impersonating a policeman to evade traffic fines is not the best idea and a 37-year-old learned this the hard way.
Vivek Ramrao Khatode, a resident of Ganesh Mala on
Sinhagad Road, was heading towards Mitra Mandal Chowk on a two-wheeler when he was intercepted by the traffic police near Sarasbaug for riding without a helmet, senior inspector Ashok Kadam of the Swargate police told TOI.
However, instead of showing his licence and paying the fine, Khatode flashed an “identity card of the Maharashtra police” and claimed that he was a sub-inspector posted with the state anti-terrorism squad (ATS), Mumbai unit.
However, the traffic policemen found his behaviour odd and asked him a few questions.
“Khatode gave misleading answers on the functioning of the ATS, which prompted the police to take him to the Swargate police station. They then conducted an enquiry with the ATS, Mumbai office, following which it was revealed that Khatode was carrying a fake ID card to evade traffic fines. He was arrested immediately,” Kadam said.
Constable Tanaji Shinde has filed a complaint against Khatode.
“He has been arrested for impersonation,” the police said, adding, “Investigation are under way to ascertain as to how did he get the fake ID card and if he tried to evade fines using the same modus in the past."
