On the World Environment Day, city-based NGO Helping Hearts inaugurated a vegetable nursery to distribute seedlings to school students and to promote cultivation of organic vegetables in homes for a healthier lifestyle.
Seedlings of tomato, chilli, lady’s finger, bottle gourd and beans are available from the nursery, set up in MGR Nagar near KNG Pudur Pirivu. The seedlings, which are distributed for free, are mature enough for re-plantation. Seeds are procured from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University’s horticulture department.
Assistant director of Agricultural University in Karamadai Seeniraj inaugurated the nursery on Thursday. A workshop on organic farming conducted on the occasion was attended by 80 students from a corporation school in the area and their teachers. The students planted tomato, chilli, lady’s finger and beans on the school campus.
On the same day, the postal department released a special cover in Anaikatty to recognize the Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History’s (SACON) contribution to ornithological research.
