The jawan, identified as Manzoor Ahmad Baig, a territorial army jawan from Sadoora in district Anantnag was home on leave for Eid.
Defence spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said the terrorists shot at Baig when he was at his residence. He was evacuated to the nearest hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. “The soldier was unarmed and on a 12-day leave to celebrate Eid with family,” he said.
“All ranks of Chinar Corps offer their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. In this hour of grief, the Army stands in solidarity with the bereaved family and remains committed to their dignity and wellbeing,” he added.
