CHENNAI: In a freak
accident, a rear tyre of a bus burst causing the floorboards above it to explode and injure three passengers — two women and child — near Tiruttani on Wednesday.
The bus headed from Tiruttani to Chittoor carrying about 50 passengers had been running for about five minutes after it left the Tiruttani bus terminus when the tyre and the floorboards exploded with a loud bang. The passengers in the seats directly over the tyres were injured as the floorboards under their feet burst inwards. V Iswaryah, 19, fractured her right leg and a 40-year-old woman sitting beside her was injured as was her three-year-old child who was in her lap.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that the passengers travelled in the bus were jolted and many of them were thrown up to the roof of the vehicle and fell.
Police said the bus driver swiftly reacted and brought the vehicle to a halt by the side of the road, avoiding other vehicles and pedestrians on the road. Police said many passengers were jolted out of their seats in the impact caused by the tyre burst. The front windshield of the bus was also damaged.
An investigating officer said the damage would have been much worse if a front tyre had burst as the driver would would have lost control of the bus that was travelling at a fair speed. In this case, the damage was limited as it was an inner rear tyre that had burst and the outer tyre acted as a buffer. The injuries to the passengers were caused by the floorboards giving way, which did not usually happen.
Police said Iswaryah, a native of Bengaluru, was returning home after visiting relatives in Tiruttani. Witnesses alerted police and the ‘108’ ambulance service. The injured were taken to the government hospital in Tiruttani where doctors said Iswaryah’s condition was stable. The other woman and her daughter left after being administered first aid.
The Tiruttani police registered a case and have seized the bus, which will be examined by the regional transport officials.
