CHENNAI: A 75-year-old man who set his live-in partner on fire during a quarrel at their
Kodambakkam residence also caught fire and the two died in hospital on Wednesday, police said.
Vadivelu, who retired from the Indian Postal Service as an office assistant, and Amudha, 68, were staying in a rented house at Sherkhan Garden in Kodambakkam. Around 10.30pm on Tuesday, the two were allegedly drunk when a quarrel erupted over a trivial matter, an officer said.
As it intensified,
Vadivelu doused Amudha's body with
kerosene and set her on fire but his clothes too caught fire. Hearing their cries, neighbours ran in and rushed them to the Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital where they died the next morning. They had suffered more than 75% burns. The Kodambakkam police registered a case.
Police said Vadivelu had separated from his wife and two children about three decades ago and Amudha moved in with him 10 years ago.
