Coimbatore: A 24-year-old man was found dead near his house on Kothapalayam-Semmandamapalaym Road near Karumathampatti in the early hours of Thursday with injuries to his head and hands.
The Karumathampatti police said he might have been either killed in a road accident or murdered by unidentified people. An investigation officer said they could ascertain the exact cause of death only after getting the postmortem report.
The officer identified the deceased as B Paramasivam, of Ananthapuram near Semmandampalayam. He was employed with a power loom unit.
“In the morning, his neighbours found him dead on the road with injuries and alerted us,” the officer said. Immediately, the Karumathampatti police reached the spot and held an inquiry with the neighbours. The body was sent to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) for postmortem.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that Paramasivam and his friends had attended a marriage function on Wednesday night and later consumed liquor on Kothapalayam-Semmandamapalayam road. “They reportedly spend time together till 4am on Thursday,” the officer said.
Paramasivam returned home after that but only to venture out immediately. “He might have been knocked down by a vehicle or assaulted by some people. We can’t say anything conclusive until we get the postmortem report,” the officer said.
The Karumathampatti police have registered a case under Section 174 (suspicious death) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and further investigation is on.
