Pune: Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Road Department has decided to draft a policy to make provision for rainwater harvesting (RWH) system on all roads in the city to improve water table index and solve the problem of water logging.

Every monsoon, the civic body struggles with the problem of water logging. A few activists have alleged that the problem of the water logging is due to lack of setting up of stormwater drain system during concretisation of roads. At present, out of 2,500 kilometre roads, only 500 kilometre roads have stormwater drain system.

While speaking to Sakal Times, PMC’s additional city engineer of road department, Aniruddha Pawaskar said, “During monsoon, water goes directly to the nalas and rivers through the stormwater drain system. Now, we are working to introduce rainwater harvesting system on roads along with the stormwater drain system, so water would percolate in the ground directly and increase the ground water level.”

“Earlier, the rainwater harvesting system was used for buildings only. In 2016, for the first time, the civic body introduced a pilot project for rainwater harvesting on the roads. It was first implemented in Kothrud area.”
