Litterbugs, Big Brother is watching you

Ludhiana: Litterbugs beware! The municipal corporation has installed CCTV cameras near Chand Cinema bridge to keep an eye on those throwing garbage into Buddha Nullah. After cleaning up the stretch, a green belt will be developed along the drain banks. The pilot project will then be replicated in other areas through which the drain flows.
“The project has been started from the area as the drain banks near Chand Cinema is one of the filthy ones. After making two cameras functional, the civic body on Wednesday planted saplings on the stretch. MC officials have been directed to develop green belts along the banks of Buddha Nullah in other areas too. We will issue challans to those who throw garbage into the drain. The repeat offenders will face FIR for spoiling the environment,” said MC commissioner KP Brar.
The cameras’ control room has been set up in a nearby temple. The sanitary inspector of the area will monitor the cameras.
Recently, a panel constituted by the National Green Tribunal had directed the MC to check pollution of the drain.
Meanwhile, on World Environment Day, the MC planted 500 saplings in all its zonal offices.

Two officers appointed for challaning
MC has appointed two officers — Dr Vipul Malhotra, medical officer (health), and Rajinder Singh, superintending engineer of operation and maintenance cell — to check Buddha Nullah litterbugs. While Dr Malhotra will issue challans to the offenders, Rajinder Singh will keep a tab on dairy owners who throw cow dung into the drain.
