Belghoria: A 36-year-old Trinamool Congress leader was shot twice from a point blank range in North Dum Dum’s Nimta on Tuesday evening. The victim, Nirmal Kundu, died shortly after being brought to a local nursing home in Belghoria. A large police contingent along with Rapid Action Force personnel have been deployed in the area after Trinamool supporters resorted to road blockade and agitated in front of Nimta police station. Trinamool Congress has blamed the BJP for the killing.
Around 7.45pm, Kundu, the Trinamool Congress president of Ward 6, under North Dum Dum municipality, was interacting with a few party workers in front of a tea stall less than a kilometre away from Belghoria station when the attack took place.
Locals said two bike-borne men came and stopped near Kundu. Then the pillion rider took out a pistol and fired two rounds at Kundu. One bullet hit his head, while the other hit his shoulder. The duo managed to escape even as locals tried to chase them. Both the riders were wearing helmets.
Bleeding, Kundu was rushed to the ICU of a nursing home in Belghoria, where he later died.
“Kundu’s hard work had helped Sougata Roy to lead from Ward 6 during the recently-held elections. He was earlier threatened by BJP supporters, who have now killed him,” alleged North Dum Dum town Trinamool Congress president Bidhan Biswas.
BJP, however, refuted the charges and blamed internal clash in the Trinamool. “BJP has nothing to do with this incident,” claimed Shankar Chaterjee of BJP Barasat unit.
Sources said the incident could be a fallout of an attack on BJP workers on Sunday.
