Southampton: South Africa were dealt with a massive blow on Tuesday as the seasoned fast bowler Dale Steyn was ruled out of the World Cup due to a shoulder injury.

Steyn had already missed the first two games which South Africa lost against England and Bangladesh due to his injury.
The fast bowler was injured during IPL 2019 and missed the World Cup opener against the host nation. He will be replaced by left-arm paceman Beuran Hendricks in South Africa’s squad for the rest of the tournament.

So the murmurs around the press-room were, can the speedster recover from the injuries and make a comeback in the International cricket arena.

Fast bowlers, especially those who are still maturing physically, are susceptible to a wide range of injuries that can result in lengthy layoffs.

Steyn, who will be 36 next month, has had his fare-share of injuries over the years. In November 2015, he had groin strain and missed the 3 match Test series against India.

In a month’s time, South Africa hosted England--and Steyn who was making a comeback from injury, broke down with shoulder spasms.
Team doctor optimistic

According to South African team doctor Mohammed Moosajee, Steyn had suffered a second shoulder injury since arriving in England for the World Cup.

For that reason, he was allowed to be replaced in the squad because the injury was different to the one he arrived at the tournament with.

“Dale’s case has been unique,” Moosajee said confirming that Steyn had consulted with an orthopaedic surgeon in London and that he had received an injection in the hope of getting pain free, but eventually a decision had to be taken.

“The champion bowler that Dale is, every effort was made to allow him to recover and get ready for this tournament,” Moosajee said.

“Unfortunately this was not to be.” Steyn’s sheer tenacity and accuracy struck fears amongst the batsman and gave him fare-following around the world. With 439 Test wickets and 200 ODI wickets to his name, the cricket fans hope to see more of this champion bowler.
