Yavatmal: An unidentified, probably unwed, mother abandoned a newborn baby in an state transport (ST) bus plying between Pandharkawda and Yavatmal on Monday night. The baby had died before the conductor noticed it wrapped in rags under one of the seats of his bus.
The conductor alerted the depot manager and others. A complaint was lodged at Awadootwadi police station by conductor Shahadat Ali Manwar (52), a resident of local Gulshan Nagar. Police reached the local ST bus station in the night and conducted the panchnama. They the body to GMC.
LCB chief Deepak Siraskar said a man and woman were among the passengers who boarded from Pandharkawda. They were the last to alight at Yavatmal bus stand. Before leaving the bus, they might have abandoned the dead body in the bus itself.
He rejected the notion that the woman gave birth in the running bus. “The woman, probably unwed mother, delivered the child elsewhere and when the child died, she dumped it in the ST bus,” Siraskar said.
Awadootwadi police have registered a criminal offence under section 318 of IPC against unknown accused.
