Coimbatore: The city corporation is yet to complete restoration work of Udayampalayam Main Road, which was commenced three months ago.
Residents and commuters said the road has turned from bad to worse since the work has begun. “The city corporation dug up the road two years ago to lay pipelines. Though it completed the work after a year, the civic body failed to relay the road, which is hardly motorable today,” Mahendran, a resident, said.
Pointing out that the work to relay the road was taken up just a few days before the announcement of Lok Sabha election date, he said, “The city corporation, however, stopped the work abruptly after pouring cement mixture. Since then, it has been a nightmare to travel on the stretch.”
Vehicles plying on the road often leave the area completely enveloped in dust. “There is a private college on the road. Hundreds of students ply their vehicles through the stretch, leaving layers of dust settle down on buildings and items in shops,” Rajan, a grocery shop owner, said. “I dust items in my shops at least 10 times a day. But, it results in breathing problems.”
Muthammal, a commuter, said small stones were scattered across the road. “I had stumbled several times after stepping on one of them. Fortunately, I did not trip over. But I have seen some motorists lose control of their vehicles and fall off.”
Pointing to a few dug-up corners on the road, Mahendran said they were made by telecom companies. “They dug up the road and fail to close it properly after work.” He also brought to TOI’s attention leak on a pipeline connected to an over-head tank. Drinking water was leaking through a hole and spreading on a stretch of the road, turning mud to sludge.
“The worst part is that the city corporation has failed to respond to several complaints. After making several representations, we have stopped complaining to them,” he said.
When contacted, corporation officials assured to look into the issue.
