Met predicts temp dip with showers today

Kolkata: Look ahead for pleasant days ahead as the mercury is set to slide down the Celsius scale from Wednesday onwards. Met office expects showers from Wednesday that will bring relief from the scorcher. The temperature may plunge three to five notches below normal.
“As forecast earlier, thundershower activities are likely in the next three to four days with rain on Wednesday and Thursday expected to be heavier,” said GK Das, director (weather) at Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata.
Two cyclonic circulations — one over Jharkhand and the other over Bangladesh — are expected to merge over the Bengal sky, trigging the showers. The two systems are inching towards Bengal are likely to merge by Wednesday. Met office also expects heavy showers at a few places in North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly and Midnapore districts.
The mercury had slipped to 34.8°C on Sunday after the city and its surrounding areas witnessed some showers, triggered by clouds pushed up by a trough of low pressure extending from Jharkhand to northeast India. Though intensity of the rain was higher in areas surrounding the city, a cloud cover since morning kept the mercury in check. However, the temperature rose to 35.2°C on Monday in the absence of thundershower activities. The maximum temperature on Tuesday went down again to 34.8°C.
With the Met office expecting rains, the maximum temperature is expected to go down to 32°C on Wednesday and slip further on Thursday. The city might see monsoon not keeping its date with the city, but thundershowers like this in run-up to the monsoon is likely to keep the heat at bay.
Earlier India Meteorological Department had announced that the southwest monsoon would arrive in Kerala on June 6. But on Tuesday, IMD sources said the arrival could be as late at June 8 due to a ‘weak monsoon flow’. In such a situation, its arrival in Kolkata would be delayed, even as Met officials cite a margin of plus/minus four days as normal.

Under normal conditions, monsoon is slated to enter the city on June 8.
In 2018, monsoon hit the Kerala coast on May 29, three days ahead of its scheduled arrival. It had reached Kolkata on June 11.
