Swedish home furnishing company IKEA launched the ‘Better Air Now’ initiative on Environment Day. The company’s aim is to take action on a global environmental issue by turning rice straws - a harvesting residue that contributes heavily to air pollution when burned - into raw material.

The first results are seen in the upcoming collection FÖRÄNDRING which means ‘change’. The long-term ambition is to create a model for how to reduce air pollution in other crop burning regions of the world, which is why Ikea has joined the climate and clean air coalition.

“Growing up in India I have never been able to take clean air for granted, heavy air pollution is part of mine and many other people’s everyday life. The idea of doing something that contributes to improving the situation has given me a lot of energy. We wanted to reflect this important topic in this collection,” said, Akanksha Deo, IKEA designer in India.

Health is getting more affected due to air pollution which is growing day by day and serves as a global concern. The situation in North India is most alarming as it is the area which is counted among 9 of 10 of the world most polluted cities. Through the ‘Better Air Now’ initiative they aimed to make rice straw as new renewable products for IKEA products which were launched in 2018.
