Fresh off setting a new electric vehicle lap record on the Nurburgring, Volkswagen has released a clip of the entire run.

The video combines a series of onboard shots from the ID.R with additional footage captured by a helicopter which flew overhead throughout the record-setting run.

Unsurprisingly, the all-electric, purpose-built race car is able to take corners at the circuit at extraordinary speeds. It can also brake very late into corners and, with a time of 6:05.336, easily beat the previous record held by the NIO EP9 by a cool 40.564 seconds.

One particularly interesting thing we noticed while watching the run is how the car tops out at roughly 250 km/h (155 mph) along the straight due to its electric powertrain and the drag generated by its crazy aerodynamics. To put that into perspective, the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo, which holds the outright record at the Nordschleife, reached 369 km/h down the main straight of the German circuit.

The ID.R first burst onto the international stage last year, when it set a record of 7:57.148 at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and then proceeded to set an EV record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed with a blistering time of just 43.86 seconds.

The man behind the wheel during the record-breaking Nurburgring run was Romain Dumas. The French driver has enjoyed huge success in endurance racing throughout the years and has two overall wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans to his name, having also won the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship with Marc Lieb and Neel Jani.
