CHENNAI: A week after
Tasmac bar agent
Nellaiyappan committed
suicide in front of the Mamallapuram
police station, two police officers have been given clean chit and departmental action initiated against them has been dropped.
Additional superintendent of police (Addl. SP) Thillai M Natarajan of the Kancheepuram district crime against women and children, now assigned to handle the Nellaiyappan suicide case, has issued clean chit to Mamallapuram police inspector Ravikumar and sub-inspector Thirunavukarasu. His findings confirmed that the duo failed to name Mamallapuram deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Subbaraj and inspector of police in their FIR, while they named only AIADMK worker Anandan and others.
Earlier, Kancheepuram district superintendent of police Santhosh Haidmeni transferred Ravikumar and Thirunavukarasu to the district police control room citing that they failed to take immediate action based on Nellaiyappan’s complaint, when he had approached the Mamallapuram police station on May 28.
Police personnel arrested AIADMK worker Anandan, who assigned Nellaiyappan to manage the accounts and routine chores of at least eight illegal Tasmac bars in and around Tiruporur, for which Anandan collected an amount from the everyday collection from Nellaiyappan. He was arrested for abetting the suicide of Nellaiyappan.
Soon after the incident, Haidmeni ordered the transfer of inspectors Pandi and Kannan to district police control room as they colluded with Nellaiyappan and took bribe money from him. Subbaraj was asked to go on compulsory leave. A depressed Nellaiyappan took the extreme step after he was hounded by the policemen and politicians who demanded that he pay more bribe and when he went to lodge a complaint against them, the Mamallapuram police refused to register a case.
