Over 1: India 3/0
Tidy start from Imran Tahir, just three singles came off it.

Welcome Back! Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma start the India run chase. Imran Tahir open the South Africa attack.

Jasprit Bumrah: "We wanted to bowl hard lengths with the new ball, Test match lengths and early wickets are always helpful for the team and we are happy we were able to do it. Not too much... It was a T20 competition and he was in my team but over here there was a lot of help (If he worked out QdK during his MI days). When there is seam movement you don't need to try too much. Just bowl good hard lengths and wait for the batsman to do mistakes. We got a good prep period. We wanted to tick all boxes before our first match. Maybe the wicket has flattened out. Hopefully we will chase it down."

* After Jasprit Bumrah (2/35) removed the South African openers early in the innings, Yuzvendra Chahal (4/51) and Kuldeep Yadav (1/46) took wickets at regular intervals to keep South Africa in check during the middle overs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/44) then ended the innings with a two-wicket over for India. Chris Morris (42) and Kagiso Rabada (31*) added a valuable 66 runs for the 8th wicket to take South Africa past 200-run mark. But the question is -- Is the 228-run target enough for the batting might of India?

End of Over 8: Clearly Bumrah has got under SA skin. They evidently want to see his opening spell off now. Not taking any chances. Bhuvneshwar also doing a good containing job from the other end. SA 31/2

End of Over 6: Bumrah's figures 2/10 in 3 overs. SA's score 26/2. The dreaded start has hit the Proteas. Faf and Van der Dussen in the middle now now.

GAWN! Bumrah on fire! Edge, and Virat in business at the third slip. It was bowled at 143kmph and kicked up with some extra bounce. De Kock (10) could do little and the skipper takes a nice upper-cup catch. SA 24/2

End of Over 4: Bumrah looking almost unplayable as Faf du Plessis also edges one to the slips but it falls short. 15/1

End of Over 2: Banana swing, ala Kapil! A bit of a contest between Bumrah and De Kock, team-mates at Mumbai Indians, as the ball goes past the bat more than once in the over. Smiles exchanged. And a close call for the left-hander as well when he misjudged a second run. Dhoni missed the stumps. SA 4/0

Jasprit Bumrah has the other new white ball from the opposite end.

End of Over 1: A single each for Amla and De Kock to get South Africa going. Little movement as well for Bhuvi, but it looks a good surface to bat on. 2/0

Bhuvneshwar Kumar to open bowling for India. SA will be glad to have Hashim Amla walking out with Quinton de Kock to open.

Time for National Anthems.

CAPTAIN TALK

Virat Kohli: The crowd support will be massive for us. Lots of people who live here and lots who are travelling here. For us its about keeping composure, remembering why we got the results in the last two years and continuing the same way. Bhuvi, Bumrah, Kuldeep and Chahal are all playing. When these guys and Hardik are playing along with Jadhav, we are always a strong bowling attack. I'm very excited, after so much cricket in the last two years. Couldn't be more grateful and happy.

Faf du Plessis: We are having a bat. Mostly because of the makeup of the side against two spinners, that's the best option. Amla is back for this game. Morris is still playing, and we're bringing in an extra spinner. We didn't have the ideal start, but we need to keep going. We need to win 6 games to get to the semis, we have seven games left.

TOSS NEWS: South Africa win the toss and decide to bat first.

It's the day when a long wait comes to an end, as Virat Kohli will lead India in their 2019 ICC World Cup opener against South Africa at The Ageas Bowl in Southampton.

India are the last among the 10 participating teams to start their campaign, while South Africa are already two matches old in the tournament -- both of which ended in defeats, to England and Bangladesh.

So while the Proteas will be eager to turn it around, title favourites India will want to make a statement with a dominating show.

Without much ado then, as we build up to the toss, here's a mouth-watering MATCH PREVIEW for the big game.
