Tamil Nadu’s first multi-specialty clinic for transgenders was inaugurated at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) on Monday. The gender guidance clinic, inaugurated by Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar, has been built at a cost of Rs 15 lakh.
Chennai:
The clinic is equipped to perform sex reassignment surgery. A team of specialists including a plastic surgeon, an endocrinologist, a gerontologist and a psychiatrist will be available at the clinic.
Since 2016, 17 sex reassignment surgeries have been performed at the RGGGH. Usually a sex reassignment surgery costs Rs 2-3 lakh. However, the surgery would be performed free of cost at the government hospital, said authorities. The centre will also be provided with additional medical equipment of about Rs 1.34 crore very soon.
The clinic will function on Fridays from
9 am to 1 pm. The distinct clinic for transgenders at RGGGH and Rajaji Government Medical College and Hospital in Madurai was announced by the Health Minister in the Assembly last year. “While transgenders can walk in to any government hospital and seek treatment, the clinic will serve as a multi-speciality centre exclusively for transgenders where they can seek treatment without hesitation,” said Vijaya Baskar.
