BENGALURU: The Karnataka State Higher Education Council on Monday decided not to allow installation of Buddha's statue at Bangalore University's Jnanabharathi campus, spiking the syndicate's decision to place it next to the statue of Goddess Saraswati.
The decision was taken at a council meeting held with higher education minister GT Devegowda in the chair and attended by vice-chancellors of universities in the state.
Saraswati's statue on the campus had suffered minor damages and was to be replaced with a new statue of the goddess. But a group of students last month installed a Buddha statue at the place. In a bid to resolve the row, the university decided that the statues of Saraswati as well as Buddha would remain side by side on the campus.
Sources said the issue was on the agenda of Monday's meeting as several universities were facing similar problems. Devegowda said no college or university in the state will be allowed to install new statues on their premises while existing ones will remain.
He also asked the Bangalore University vice-chancellor to act against those who stirred the controversy in the varsity. An inquiry into the issue is still pending.
Marks cards to go online
After the council meeting, Devegowda said marks cards of polytechnic, engineering and all colleges affiliated to various universities in the state since 1990 will be available online by this year-end.
The meeting also decided to make yoga and meditation compulsory in all colleges.
