In tracking the Narendra Modi government, BW Businessworld can justifiably say that we have always been a step or two ahead of the pack. Two years ago, our cover story read: ‘Modi’s 7-year Plan’. In other words, we knew, all along, that PM Modi would be voted back in 2019.
In India we, the media, generally stop short of endorsing public figures. BW Businessworld, however, has always believed that Modi’s positive agenda and his vision for a New India would do the country a world of good.
BJP supporters may be celebrating the unprecedented mandate that the party under the Modi-Amit Shah duo has got, but one gets a sense that the ground already has been laid for a comeback even in 2024.
Little surprise then that we lead with a Modi cover, discussing the economic challenges that the government faces. In the package, we have an interview with the Niti Aayog vice-chairman who holds forth on what ails the economy, and what is the way out.
BJP spokesperson for economic matters Gopal Krishna Agarwal pens a column on why he thinks the economy could move only one way now. Congress’s Rajeev Gowda and Salman Soz offer a counter-narrative, while discussing the challenges for the Modi government.
We also have an interview with the former Chief Economic Advisor to the government, Arvind Virmani.
Our next three covers are on the hot property that BW boasts of — BW Businessworld Best Banks Magna Awards. Like previous years, we tied up with PwC to zero in on the winners and what an eclectic mix of top winners we have!
We have on the covers Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, who is our banker of the year; Uday Kotak, who gets the lifetime achievement award; and Rajnish Kumar, the SBI chairman, who gets an award for helming the fastest growing large bank. We present to you interviews with the trio, and need one add, they are enlightening. The Best Banks issue will be one ready reckoner for the bankers and the general public alike.
This issue, in a way, is bumper issue — we also carry in this issue our annual ranking of engineering colleges. No surprises here as IITs get the pride of place. What is interesting is that some private colleges and universities are making rapid strides.
In this issue, we also carry a section on the best BFSI companies to work for, in association with the Great Place to Work Institute.
Last but not the least, did you notice the zooming markets, with the second term for the Modi government? We carry a special report on the same.
This is a collector’s item. Savour it while reading it.
