The family of an American woman who died in Fiji days before her husband after going to hospital with a mystery sickness have revealed that she complained about having numb hands before she died.

Michelle Paul, a 35-year-old mother-of-one from Fort Worth, Texas, died in a hospital on the island last week.

Her husband, David, died days later. The pair had to be hospitalized the day before they were due to return home on May 25.

While their families have been told that they died, they remain in the dark about what caused their sudden deterioration of health.

On Tuesday, Michelle's father Marc Canalog told Good Morning America that she had texted him complaining that she had numb hands before she died.

Michelle's 75-year-old father Marc spoke out on Tuesday to say he has not been given any answers about what caused her death

'The last text I got from my daughter was her hands were numb,' he said, adding that he has not been told anything by Fijian authorities.

'Nobody is telling me what was the cause of the death and that's very hard for me,' he said.

Canalog, 75, and his 69-year-old wife have now taken care of his daughter's two-year-old son.

'As parents we are not supposed to bury our children. That is very hard for me. Very hard,' he said.

David was a veteran of the Air Force and Michelle was a former student athlete, according to the latter's sister-in-law Tracey Calanog.

She said the family received a call informing them of the couple's rapidly deteriorating health on the day before they were due to fly home.

Michelle was the first to die. David was going to be transported to Australia for further treatment, but he died before that could happen.

A US Department of State official confirmed the travelers' deaths and offered condolences to their family.

The department is keeping an eye on the investigation by local authorities. The bodies will be returned to the US after the cause of death is determined.

Family members believe that David and Michelle may have contracted a deadly virus, as the Fiji government had issued warnings about a dangerous flu season in the region.
