Tesla Model S Destroyed By Fire In Belgium While Connected To Supercharger

A Tesla Model S has been destroyed by fire while plugged in at a Supercharger station in Antwerp, Belgium.

Details about the incident remain limited but local media outlet HLN reports that the driver of the Model S parked and plugged in the sedan at a Novotel hotel. When the driver came back to his car a short time later, he discovered that both it and the Supercharger were ablaze.

Images from the scene show that the roof of the car is missing and that the entire cabin has been melted away. Local fire crews were able to extinguish the inferno before proceeding to dump the vehicle into a pool of water overnight to ensure that the battery didn’t catch fire again. The Supercharger itself was also left badly damaged and melted.

While fires involving Tesla vehicles are rare, this incident comes shortly after a handful of other Model S vehicles have been destroyed by infernos around the world. In April and May, a Tesla Model S was filmed bursting into flames while parked in Shanghai and a separate incident involving a Model S in San Francisco saw another EV catch fire. A third incident occurred in Hong Kong last month.

In response to these three fires, Tesla introduced an over-the-air update which revised the charge and thermal management settings of the Model S and Model X “to help further protect the battery and improve battery longevity.”

Tesla has yet to issue a statement regarding the most recent fire in Belgium but it does typically investigate incidents like this.
