The West Bengal police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested an alleged serial killer who has confessed to killing seven middle-aged women in the rural areas of Bardhaman and Hooghly districts.
“Earlier this week, we arrested Kamaruzzaman Sarkar in connected with a murder. The accused has confessed to killing six more women,” said Bhaskar Mukherjee, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Bardhaman. He said all the murders were committed between October 2018 and May 2019.
According to the police, the accused sexually assaulted the victims after injuring them with heavy, blunt objects.
Most of the victims were targeted when they were alone at home. The accused entered the house on the pretext of taking electricity meter readings.
Initial clues
The police got initial clues after the the murder of a woman from Gaora village in Bardhaman district. CCTV footage of the suspect wearing a red helmet and riding a red motorbike was obtained and all police stations were alerted.
Sarkar, 42, was arrested on Sunday and has been remanded in police custody for 12 days.
The police are also taking the help of a psychiatrist to assess the mental state of the accused.
