The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday closed a contempt petition filed against the State after the latter informed the court that the order to give compensation was complied with.

Justice G.R. Swaminathan closed the contempt petition. Earlier, the State was directed to pay a compensation of ₹10 lakh to the mother of the girl who was killed in 2010 after she was knocked down by a bullock cart carrying sand illegally quarried from the Vaigai riverbed.

The mother of the deceased girl had filed the petition seeking a grant of compensation. The court had directed the grant of compensation in 2017. However, the State had preferred an appeal against the order. The appeal was subsequently dismissed and the State was directed to pay compensation to the mother.
