After days of sweltering weather, people across the State had relief on Monday as light to heavy rainfall and thundershowers occurred in most of the districts.
The sudden change in the weather towards the evening was triggered by an upper air cyclonic circulation over the west central Bay of Bengal off the north AP and south Odisha coasts, according to the India Meteorological Department’s inference. The cyclonic circulation was between 3.6 km and 4.5 km above mean sea level.
According to reports, two persons — M. Arjuna Rao of Buttayagudem mandal in East Godavari and Sivaiah of Raptadu mandal in Anantapur districts — were killed in lightning strikes. According to unconfirmed reports, V. Prasad, who was riding a motorcycle, was killed in a rain-related mishap near Kambadur of Anantapur district.
One mandal each in Guntur, Visakhapatnam and Prakasam districts received more than 60 mm of rainfall as of 8 pm, according to the Real-Time Governance Society. Tenali of Guntur district received the highest cumulative rainfall of 65 mm.
Several other mandals in the districts of Visakhapatnam, Prakasam, East Godavari, Vizianagaram, Guntur and Srikakulam received moderate to heavy rainfall between 56 mm and 17 mm.
Visakhapatnam Urban mandal’s automatic weather station (AWS) recorded cumulative rainfall of 60.25 mm. Crop loss was reported in various districts due to heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds.
In Vijayawada, though the rainfall was not substantial, temperature came down in the evening.
Maximum temperatures across the State came down, particularly in interior Rayalaseema. The maximum temperatures of Kadapa, Anantapur and Kurnool were not more than 39° Celsius. The State’s highest maximum temperature was recorded in Prakasam’s Darsi mandal at 44.8° Celsius followed by Jaladanki (43.4 ° C) of Nellore and Battiprolu (43.3 ° C) of Guntur.

Similar weather conditions might prevail on Tuesday as the IMD predicts light to moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated places over Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema. IMD also warned that isolated places over Rayalaseema were likely register above normal maximum temperatures.
RTGS’s AP Weather Forecasting and Early Warning Research Centre (AWARE) also predicted light to moderate rainfall in Rayalaseema districts and very light rainfall in north Andhra districts. On the same day, temperatures could be around 45°C in most of the areas of coastal Andhra, according to AWARE.
