PUNE: Two men assaulted a police constable with a cement block and robbed him of Rs 1,500 at
Chandni Chowk in Bhosari late on Saturday night .
The constable, Bhimaji Modhe (47), of Gavane Vasti in Bhosari suffered head injuries in the attack. “Modhe has received two stitches on his head,” an officer from the Bhosari police said, adding that the suspects have been booked under Section 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) of the Indian Penal Code.
Modhe, who is attached to the Dighi police, told TOI that the incident occurred around 9.45pm when he was walking towards Chandni Chowk for buying milk from a grocery shop. “I reached home after finishing duty on Saturday night and realized that there was no milk at home to feed my grandson. So, I went out to buy it. When I reached near a lodge at the chowk, two men approached me and asked me if I was carrying cash,” he said.
The constable said before he could say anything, one of them forcibly took out Rs 1,500 from his shirt’s pocket. “When I told them that I am a policeman, the duo panicked and one of them picked up a cement block from the road and hit me on the head before fleeing the spot,” he said.
He said there were people at the chowk when the entire incident unfolded. “I raised an alarm, but nobody came to help me,” Modhe said, adding, “I then went home and went to a doctor for treatment later. On Sunday, I approached the police station and lodged the complaint.”
Another officer from the Bhosari police said the police have checked the CCTV footages from the establishments near the chowk. “But, the footages are not clear. We have launched a search to trace and nab the suspects,” the officer said.
