Tourist, 59, drowns while snorkelling off the Great Barrier Reef as his female companion is pulled from the water

An overseas tourist has drowned while snorkelling off the Great Barrier Reef.
The man, 59, was pulled from the water unconscious on the western coast of Queensland's Lady Elliot Island at 1.53pm on Monday.
Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene after attempts at resuscitation failed.
A woman also suffered a near-drowning at the same time.

She was airlifted to Bundaberg Hospital in a stable condition.
Her relationship to the man who drowned is unknown.
A Queensland Police Service spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia that it is unknown whether the man suffered a medical episode, and it would be up to the coroner to investigate.
