Rajkot: Devji Rathod (36), his wife and one of his relatives were detained after they attempted self-immolation claiming police inaction against those booked for threatening him and his family members, at Vadla village in Vadhwan taluka of Surendranagar.
The police team which was already present at the spot stopped Rathod, who had doused self in kerosene, from setting self on fire.
Police said Rathod had objected to deepening of pond in his village by deputy sarpanch Jagdishsinh Kher and his cousin Shaktisinh Kher. Rathod had alleged that the deputy sarpanch and his cousin want to deepen the pond that was already deep enough to store water during monsoon. He had claimed that the duo was trying to usurp government money. This angered Khers and they allegedly threatened Rathod on May 14.
Following this, Rathod lodged complaint with police against the duo, who were booked under the SC/ST Prevention Act. But when there was no action against them, Rathod decided to immolate himself.
