KOLKATA: Look ahead for more pleasant days ahead as the mercury is set to slide down on the Celsius scale from Wednesday onwards.
Met office expects showers from Wednesday bringing relief from the scorching heat. The temperature could plunge three to five notches below the normal.
“As predicted earlier we are expecting thundershower activities in the next three to four days, with the rains on Wednesday and Thursday expected to be heavier,” said GK Das, director (weather) at Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata.
Two cyclonic circulations – one over Jharkhand and the other over Bangladesh – are expected to merge over Bengal sky, trigging the showers. The two systems are inching towards Bengal and are likely to merge by Wednesday. In addition to Kolkata, Met office expects heavy showers in few places of the neighbouring North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly and Midnapore districts.
The mercury had slipped to 34.8 degree Celsius on Sunday after the city and surrounding area witnessed some smart showers, triggered by clouds pushed up by a trough of low pressure extending from Jharkhand to North East India. Though intensity of the rain was higher in the city and surrounding areas, a cloud cover since morning had played check mate to the mercury. But it rose to 35.2 Degree Celsius on Monday in the absence of thundershower activities. The maximum temperature on Tuesday went down again to 34.8 degree Celsius.
With the Met office expecting rains, the maximum temperature is expected to go down to 32 degree on Wednesday and slip further on Thursday. The city might see
monsoon not keeping its date with the city, but thundershowers like this in run up-to the monsoon is likely to keep the heat at bay.
