A day after youth performed stunts on bikes on Kamarajar Salai, the city police conducted a special drive against illegal bike racing on arterial roads and booked nearly 250 cases. According to the police, the special drive was conducted on Sunday by the traffic police in association with law and order police personnel to prevent bike racing on Kamarajar Salai after the road rage on Saturday night and death of a pillion rider on Sunday morning.
On Sunday night, check posts were put up at 29 points on Kamarajar Salai. As many as 20 personnel of mobile patrolling teams attached with the law and order wing and five patrolling vehicles from the traffic wing were deployed. Two ACPs, with 130 police personnel conducted the special drive.
“During the drive, as many as 80 cases were booked for overspeed, rash and negligent driving, while 22 cases booked for drunken driving. As many as 130 persons were booked for riding two wheelers without wearing helmets and 10 more cases for triple riding,” said a senior police officer.
Seven four wheelers, 16 bikes and one auto were seized. Recommendation has been sent to the transport department to revoke driving licences of motorists who drove the vehicles in a dangerous manner, according to a release from the Traffic Police.
